Ozone is a gas. It is the clean, fresh smell that you find at high altitudes and after thunderstorms. Above us, high in the atmosphere it is our natural protection against harmful sunlight, and it is present all around us in the air we breathe.

Ozone kills bacteria, viruses and fungi within five seconds. It is used in hospitals and public places to control infections and smells. It is used to purify water you drink. Ozone works by breaking up the cell walls of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and breaking up sulphurous compounds into non-smelling compounds.

We use a small laser, the Diagnodent, to look inside the surface of your teeth. It detects areas of bacteria that cause decay and gives us an idea of how much decay is present. A special hand piece then supplies ozone to the decayed area. It is simple and painless. There is no drilling, fillings, injections or damage to your tooth.
Ozone kills the acid-producing bacteria that cause decay and gum disease. Once these bacteria are eliminated, the Healozone unit puts a special liquid mineral on to the cleaned area. This starts the healing part of the tooth treatment. We also give you a special toothpaste and mouth rinse. These contain all the essential minerals that your body needs to repair the decayed area. Regular use of the home kit will ensure the success of your ozone treatment.

We bring you back after three months to check the laser readings. The research shows that in over 96% of cases, the decay has stopped or reversed.

No! The whole process of the laser readings, the ozone application and the mineral wash are painless. It does not involve any damage to your tooth or gum tissue.

The alternatives to ozone are traditional treatments we have offered you in the past. These are:

  • Fissure sealants with air abrasion. This involves limited damage to your tooth.
  • Fillings with injection and drill. This involves an injection, drilling away the decay and then putting in a filling to stop up the damaged area. Fillings usually need to be replaced after 5-10 years.
  • Further decay and pain. This is probably what will happen if you have no treatment on a tooth that has decay present, and the tooth may have to be removed.

The current cost per tooth is £85.

Yes, there will be. As a practice we will be involved in finding new ways of using Healozone in dentistry. One of our interests is the ability to be able to kill over 99% of all the bacteria when preparing a conventional cavity in a tooth. We recommend that when an old filling is replaced, the cavity is treated with ozone before the new filling is put in place. It is believed that this will greatly reduce the risk of further decay in that tooth and should help reduce sensitivity and the need to have root canal therapy. Additional cost per filling will be £25.
